Professor Chung-I Tan, 83, of Barrington passed away on Wednesday, April 8, 2026. He was the beloved husband of Corinne Tan for 61 years; loving father of Jessica Tan and Michael Tan and his wife Ann; devoted grandfather of Madelyn and Chloe; cherished brother of Chung-Jen Tan (wife, Lorrain) and Shirley Lian (husband, Ming-Shih); and caring uncle of Christopher, Serena, Stephen, and Jeffrey.
Born in China, he was a son of the late Teh-Hsing Tan and Chung-Ying Hsu. After time spent in Taiwan, Northern California, and New Jersey, Chung-I settled in Rhode Island in 1970. A Professor of Theoretical Physics at Brown University, Professor Tan conducted research in high-energy physics and the fundamental forces that govern matter. Throughout his extensive career, he was recognized for both his scholarly contributions and his dedication to mentorship.
In addition to doing physics, Chung-I had a rich life outside of work. As an adult, he became an avid fly fisherman, tennis player, and skier. Through these activities, he developed a robust network of friends. He also set an example of lifelong learning for his children. When asked to describe Chung-I, his family described him as being a hard worker; a fan of travel; kind, thoughtful, and honest; and having a cheerful demeanor.
He was cherished and he will be missed.
In place of flowers, donations to Blood Cancer United are appreciated.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
